Interpretive Centre for the Guerrilla Movement in La Cerollera

guerrilla cerollera

The importance of guerilla activity in La Cerollera and its surrounding area was the reason behind this permanent exhibition space. The presence of guerillas in La Cerollera was reported from January 1945, although it was in 1947 when Ángel Fuertes, chief of the 17 Guerilla Association for Levant and Aragon (AGLA), set up his headquarters in La Cerollera and a camp and training base for guerilla fighters. Olive oil mill - La Cañada de Verich

The old olive oil mill in this town has been restored to create a museum dedicated to explaining the process used to make olive oil and the history of local oil production.

This old mill, which was in operation until 1982, has two features of great interest; a hydraulic press dating from the early 20th century – still in working order –and the remnants of a press dating from the 17th century, which was found during restoration of the building.

The Mas de las Matas Museum located in the building known as Casa Feliu, houses an important collection of marine fossils. Through the use of different interactive equipment, an illustrated journey through time is presented in relation to the process by which the exhibited finds were formed. In addition to prehistoric molluscs, the exhibit includes the process by which the volcanic rocks of the area were formed in a section devoted to the evolution of the Earth's crust.

At the entrance, a “clock of history” provides a comparison between the times needed for these changes to occur and the human life cycle.

The upper level of the former church of San Sebastián in Alcorisa houses the fascinating Rural School Museum which takes visitors back in time to their childhood school days.  (Download the BROCHURE).

One of the rooms is faithfully set up as the inside of a post-war school with a number of surprises to be revealed. Finally, the museum offers the chance to obtain an unforgettable souvenir by repeating the photo taken during the first days at a Spanish school: blue or pink smock – in all sizes, a globe, mission money box, and a map of Spain as the backdrop… an interesting proposition.

In addition, you can touch the restored furniture and school material, write with a fountain pen or on a slate, re-read the original books that filled the typical school bag, newspapers and magazines from decades ago, or relive the needlework classes with a stretcher frame. You will also have the opportunity to look at school photographs from many villages in Aragon, listen to often-repeated childhood music, and we also ask visitors to leave us with their school memories by writing in the visitors' book.

The projection of an excellent audiovisual and the visit to the Rural School Museum will fill your mind with unforgettable sensations, the smell of a wood-burning stove, lessons by teachers that left their mark and sharing a desk with your classmates.

Come and visit this museum, the only one of its kind in the province. You will remember what it feels like to be a child again and remember the past to understand the present. Come and enjoy the experience with your students and family, to share the impressions of childhood, because education is the only thing that makes humans equal.

castillo pinturas compressor

The castle is located on the Pui-Pinos Hill. It is reached by climbing a steep winding path and passing through the solid gateway arch, which in the style of Moorish fortresses, is perpendicular to the wall. This castle-convent was initially built in the Romanesque style, but was subsequently extended and remodelled. Among the oldest remaining parts of the castle are the Romanesque side chapel, the proto-Gothic cloister and the Gothic keep. The single-nave chapel with pointed barrel vault has one of the few Romanesque doorways found in the Lower Aragon region, with an interesting chequerboard band known as ajedrezado jaqués.

On the left (gospel) side are the remains of a very interesting piece of funerary sculpture from the Aragonese Renaissance period; the tomb of Juan de Lanuza. The cloister, built against the south wall of the chapel, has two arches spanning the space between the supporting walls. The keep stands to the west of the chapel and the lower floor serves as the porch of the chapel. There is a series of Gothic mural paintings on the ground floor and piano nobile, dating from the first half of the 14th century, which are in a regional and local interpretation of the linear Gothic style. The unique thing about them is that most deal with non-religious themes (such as the deeds of King James I of Aragon).

Some of them were removed from the walls and are know found in the town hall. There are also the remains of paintings found in the cloister, although less well preserved: in this case they deal with the funerary themes. A major remodelling took place in the 18th century, the result of which is the Commanders' Palace, which occupies the southern side of the castle precinct.

Located in the former church of San Sebastián, the Interpretive Centre for Holy Week allows visitors to learn about Holy Week in Alcorisa and its origins, sounds and traditions, through the use of multimedia projections and pleasant voice recordings. At a specific moment, the audiovisual leaves the screen to merge viewers with the reality surrounding them, showing the floats, confraternity tunics, the actual church… the effect is incredible and unforgettable.
